October 1999, Vimicro Corporation was founded in Beijing
Zhongguancun with initial support from the Ministry of Information
Industry, dedicated to develop digital multimedia chips.
March 2000, Vimicro Advisory Committee was established
including members from both Chinese and US Academy of Science
and Engineering. The committee was chaired by Professor Chang-lin
Tien, former Chancellor of UC Berkeley, member of US Academy of
Science, US Academy of Engineering, and Chinese Academy of Engineering.
Professor Tien was also one of founding investors of Vimicro.
Jaunuary 2000, Vimicro established its subsidiary in Silicon
Valley, followed with branch offices in Shanghai, Shenzhen and
Hongkong.
November 2000, Tsinghua-Vimicro Microelectronics Research
Center was established in Tsinghua University. Mr. Zhou Guangzhao,
President of Chinese Academy of Science was appointed as the honorary
Director with Dr. John Deng, Chairman and CEO of Vimicro, as the
Director.
March 11th, 2001, Vimicro released the first chip product,
an advanced imaging processor for PC USB camera market. The chip
was successfully adopted by Samsung and Philips in their system
designs.
January 2002, Vimicro and Microsoft signed a memorandum
in Beijing to collaborate on promoting digital multimedia technologies
in worldwide market. Vimicro PC multimedia chips achieved WHQL
certification for Microsoft Windows XP platform, the first among
Chinese chip vendors.
April 2002, Vimicro's second chip product, a new generation
PC USB camera processor with integrated audio and video processing,
was released. It was later adopted by leading PC USB camera vendors
such as HP, Creative and Logitech.
October 2002, Vimicro's third chip product was selected
y Fujitsu Lab as the video acquisition/processing device for Maron-1,
its cutting-edge robot that can be controlled by mobile phone
user remotely.
February 2003, Vimicro's forth chip product, Vimicro's
mobile camera processor, successfully landed in US market. It
was adopted by Sprint PCS in their "Vision" handsets
for mobile multimedia application.
September 2003, Microsoft-Vimicro Multimedia Technology
Center was established in Beijing to co-develop next generation
digital multimedia technologies and application. The strategic
partnership between the two companies entered into a new era.
October 2003, Vimicro released the fifth chip product,
the most advanced image processor for PC platform. It was widely
adopted in new generation of cameras from vendors such as Logitech,
Lenovo and Founder, and it also became China Telecom's only designated
solution for broad video applications.
February 2004, Vimicro joined Mobile Industry Processor
Interface (MIPI) Alliance as the first Chinese Chip vendor, working
with giants to standardize global 3G digital multimedia platform.
October 2004, Mobile Multimedia Technology Alliance (MMTA)
was established in Beijing with Vimicro as one of the founding
members along with Telecom Research Institute of MII, China Mobile,
China Unicom, China Telecom, China Netcom, China Putian, Huawei,
and ZTE. In addition, Vimicro officially launched "VMD partnership
program" to build up mobile multimedia industry chain in
Chinese market.
December 2004, Vimicro's series multimedia chip products
won MII's "Key IT Industry Technology Innovation Award".
April 2005, Vimicro's multimedia chip technologies won
the first prize of National Science and Technology Advancement
Award.
