Microsoft and Vimicro Collaborate to Power
Fujitsu's MARON-1 Robot
and Extend Partnership into Embedded Systems
|
Tokyo, Japan, November 8 - Microsoft Corporation and Beijing-based
Vimicro Corporation, a leading digital imaging solution provider,
announced their successful collaboration to integrate their
respective technologies to power the Fujitsu MARON-1 Robot,
and extended their strategic partnership in digital imaging
solutions from desktop PC to embedded systems.
The MARON-1 Robot, developed by Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd.,
is an advanced monitoring prototype for special patient care
as well as home and office security. Enabled by wireless access
from a DoCoMo mobile phone, the MARON-1 Robot incorporates
advanced mobile telephony, vision sensing, digital image processing
and remote control and surveillance technologies. "We chose
Microsoft's WinCE operating system on which to base our product
because of the WinCE's robustness and flexibility", said Mr.
Komada, the Director of Autonomous Systems Laboratory of Fujitsu
Laboratory, "and Vimicro is one of the best imaging solution
provider that is able to deliver a WinCE-based imaging system
that meets our performance requirements." For more information

The successful collaboration for the MARON-1 Robot marks the
second phase of the strategic partnership between Microsoft
and Vimicro to jointly promote Windows-based digital imaging
technology in worldwide markets. "Microsoft has been supporting
application partners worldwide to enhance users' multimedia
experience from desktop to non-PC devices", said Alexander
Huang, Regional Director of Microsoft's Greater China Region.
"While our two companies have been partnering since the launch
of Vimicro's VXP cameras for the Windows XP desktop operating
system, we are particularly pleased with the success of the
collaboration with Vimicro for the MARON-1 Robot, which marks
the extension of our partnership into embedded systems".
Supporting Microsoft's full line of operating systems including
the WinCE, PocketPC and SmartPhone embedded versions, Vimicro's
VXP imaging chips and solutions are used as the MARON-1 Robot's
eyes to form 3D imaging for path finding, distance measurement,
security monitoring and other critical vision functions. "Rapid
cost performance improvement has accelerated the proliferation
of digital imaging technologies into both consumer and business
applications", said Dr. John Deng, Chairman of Vimicro, "Not
only does our extended partnership with Microsoft into embedded
systems leverage our existing software development skill base,
the richness and agility of Microsoft's embedded application
development environment also accelerates our product development
cycle and cuts down development costs, thereby realizing Vimicro's
competitive potential in the global market as a leading provider
of digital imaging ICs, products and solutions".
